Why Leopard Geckos Make Great Pets
For those who want to get a pet reptile but are worried about the more intensive care of some species, like special lighting, humidity, heating, and complicated care. Leopard Geckos may be for you. They are one of the easiest reptiles to care for and is a great first step into the reptile world.
Firstly, they are on the smaller side for a Lizard, They only get to be about 6-10 inches long head to tail. This allows you to keep them in a small aquarium like a 10 gallon, which is plenty of room for one or two geckos. This means the entire setup for a leopard gecko is relatively inexpensive compared to some more advanced reptile keeping. Most 10 gallons tanks can be purchased for $15 to $25 dollars.
Secondly, they are nocturnal and don't require UVB light so you can use a heat mat or heat light. This is nice because UVB bulbs can be expensive and need to be replaced every 6 months, also they will need to be turned on and off every day and night.
Thirdly, their feeding requirements are relatively simple, they eat mealworms and or crickets pretty much exclusively. They do not need any vegetables or fruit. They are strictly insectivores, which makes feeding straight forward.
Fourthly, Leopard Geckos can be handled. They have a calm demeanor which allows for easy handling, even for a newer keeper. With no fur or dander, they make for a good pet if you are allergic to cats, dogs, or other furry animals. Also Leopard Geckos have amazing colors and patterns, you can pretty much find a gecko in every color allowing you to pick your favorite!
Lastly, they make an excellent choice as a first pet for a child or someone who isn't experienced with keeping animals. Young children can be taught and learn to care for Leopard geckos, it's a fun and great way to teach responsibility to children.
As with getting any new animal as a pet it is important to do your research and make sure you can care for the animal and that it is a right choice for you. I highly recommend considering a leopard gecko if you are looking for a new pet. They are such wonderful animals. As always if you have any questions please let me know, and thanks for reading:)
