Solution to Leopard Gecko Shedding Problems

One of the most common problems Leopard Gecko owners face is stuck or incomplete shedding. Shed being stuck on the eyes and limbs of the gecko is very common when humidity is low. Most people spray the enclosure down but in a dry environment this is not enough. Especially in the colder months of the year when you have heating on since this drys the air significantly. Also a glass aquarium with a screen top can contribute to lower humidity because of the amount of air exchange. Usually to compensate for this, many owners will over water and cause the enclosure to be wet which is just as bad and can lead to mold growth and respiratory problems as well as infections in your gecko.

The solution to this and what I recommend if you have these problems is a humid hide box. What this is is a container, usually a plastic food storage container, with a small hole cut into it big enough for your leopard gecko to go in, and a damp paper towel or damp sphagnum moss inside. What this humid hide box does is provide a specific location in your enclosure that has really hide humidity levels. This allows your gecko to move from the dryer spots of the enclosure (typically where the hot spot is) to an area that has very high humidity. This way you don't have to worry about any problems with too much humidity while maintaining your geckos ability to properly shed. The other up side to a humid hide box is that it is easier to maintain, since it is a small location with little air exchange you wont have to moisten the paper towel very often. Here is an example of a humid hide box I use.
